Camp Crystal Lake Orientation Week: Day 3 — Essential knots
By Joseph Lavers
Good morning 🐣
Welcome to Day 3 of Orientation Week! Breathe in that cool, crisp air, get cozy by the fire, and prepare yourselves for another fun day of training. But first some announcements:
Since it’s the middle of winter, we thought it would be fun to open up an ice skating rink this year. We’re even providing gear for any hockey fans on staff. Be sure to pick out your favorite goalie mask before they’re all gone!
Also we’re sad to say that we’ve heard some reports of trespassers on the property. Please study the photo above and be on the lookout for any troublesome bikers trying to roughhouse or siphon gas.
There have also been rumors of counselors being chased through the woods by masked figures and of people going missing. But don’t worry; everything’s under control and we can’t wait to see what’s coming around the corner.
So anyways, knots!
Today’s session will focus on knot tying: which ones are essential and when to use them. You’ll be surprised at how often ropes and string come up at camp. From yo-yos to hammocks to canoes on the lake — heck, even little campers’ shoelaces! — you’ll learn how to tie things up good and tight so they can’t escape. Study the above card for quick reference and you’ll be on your way in no time to slinging arrows and swinging with hay bales.
While an important safety feature, don’t forget that knots can be both fun…
…AND functional!
