Going up?
By Joseph Lavers
Good morning 🐣
I’m a big fan of single-subject niche Web sites and today I’ve got two for you.
First up is “Space Elevator” by Neal Agarwal with additional illustrations by Cindy Nhi. It’s a delightful journey as you scroll upward from the ground into space, passing by various birds, planes, and weather phenomena as if you’re Willy Wonka in his Great Glass Elevator. You even get to dress for the atmosphere (or lack of it) as you go.
But OK, you’re in space. Now what?
Might as well hop in a space station and ride their elevator to the 796th floor. Naturally.
An artist by the name of 0x00 has created what they describe as “an ever-expanding animation scene showing the life of the 796th floor of the huge space station! The goal of the project is to create as huge animation as possible, with many references to movies, games, anime and memes.”
It’s a Google Maps-like experience where you can browse around this bird’s-eye view of an insanely detailed space station. You can even zoom in (you’re gonna want to) to watch all these characters going about their lives and click on them to find out who they are. It’s like an animated “Where’s Waldo” with a mix of original designs plus endless pop culture references:
-
Wolverine and Princess Leia are making out in a bathroom stall while C-3PO ogles them through a window, Snow White does her makeup in the mirror, and Pippi Longstocking anxiously waits in line, forever glancing at her watch;
-
the clowns from “The Dark Knight” are robbing Apu from “The Simpsons” while battling characters from “The Fifth Element;”
-
the Terminator is stuck to an MRI machine; and
-
notoriously lousy-shot “Star Wars” Stormtroopers are playing Duck Hunt.
They’re adding sections all the time; just click on Changes to see what’s new. And to see how they built all this, be sure to check out their YouTube channel.
Now watch this 👀
Look I’m not a violent guy. I think even the death penalty is barbaric. But sometimes you just gotta watch some Nazis get obliterated. I mean absolutely annihilated, no holds barred, nothing left to the imagination.
It’s just one of those days.
And baby, “Sisu” provides it in spades.
A lot of people are likening it to “John Wick” — a seemingly invincible killer seeking vengeance on unquestionably bad dudes — but set in World War II in Finland. The year is 1944. A platoon of Germans wreak havoc as they flee the country, including harassing an old gold prospector on horseback played by Jorma Tommila. Little do they know that this old man is a legend whose name is whispered by locals. Soon enough he’s taking revenge: stabbing, shooting, and blowing up each Nazi one by one. And with lines like — “Do you really believe that he is immortal?” — “No, he just refuses to die” — subtlety is not its forte. It’s a gloriously messy affair, the very definition of turning off your brain and going along for the obscene ride.
It’s also got some gorgeous cinematography and decently planned choreography, making good use of humor, tension, and various environments and situations for our hero to do his thing. What I didn’t realize going into the movie is that it’s written and directed by Jalmari Helander, who made the shockingly good Christmas horror film “Rare Exports” (which also starred Tommila and his son), so I guess it all makes sense. They really know their way around a silly, but compelling premise.
